She’koyokh
London’s professional young ‘klezmer ensemble’ visited Shepton Mallet last week. Susi Evans on Clarinet, Jim Markovitch on Accordian, Meg Hamilton on Violin and Matt Bacon on Guitar. She’koykh means ‘celebration’ and their music is what is typically heard at Jewish weddings, bar mitzvahs and the like. It is lively and foot tapping as well as deep and reflective.
They began with a Thursday morning visit to St Paul’s Junior School followed by Shepton Mallet Infants and Whitstone School in the afternoon. The children were entranced with the flavours of Eastern Europe and the musicians took the time to explain their instruments and help the children to be involved in the music. There was even time for dancing in circles and weaving round the room in a snake-like fashion. Lots of fun for all, which is what the music inspires.
On Friday shoppers and traders in the Market Place were surprised and delighted to find She’koykh busking throughout the morning. Many people commented on how beautiful and uplifting the music was and how much better the market was because of it. A lunch time concert in the Church completed their visit. Sh’koykh were sponsored by ‘Live Music Now’ and ‘SuperAct’ who are working with Fran Wulf of The Chamber of Commerce to bring professional musicians to Shepton Mallet on a regular basis. If you would like to go on Fran’s contact list and be kept informed of future dates then send her an enmail: fran@shepton.biz or phone 01749 347200.
